According to the writer, Henig, as well as many other professionals who have studied the development of young adults who are "20-something", there is a lack of development and a "failure to launch" among this age group. But what is the problem with these 20-somethings? Is it the very idea of their maturation being developed slowly? Or is it the fear that they will never mature and never rise to the role society needs them to be? Personally, I have a fear of being unproductive and not maturing and maybe it's because society has portrayed this "20-somethings" as low-lifes and losers. But is there anything really wrong with wanting to get it right not just quickly? Society is making everyone do both. But discovering what you want to do is hard and isn't a guarantee in today's world where blue collar work is less prominent and has been limited due to technological advancements. I should know this as I am still undecided of my major, although nursing and psychology seem to be the front runners. But I am 18 and still feel I am "a baby", or at least thats what my co-workers, who's ages range from 20-60, tell me. I believe society's schedule has caused fear and anxiety among emerging adults, a fear I relate to.
"The only people who got this right were the car-rental companies.” I love this quote! How great would be to think that while sociologist and psychologist struggle to find answer companies like rent-a-car where right all along! But actually, I think the only people who got it right were the people in television. Arrested development is the fixation of one's internal development and it also the name of a critically acclaimed TV show. In the show the characters were spoiled millionaires who became spoiled former millionaires. But despite the external conflicts in the life, it never transferred to internal change. Which seems to represent the lack of change within emerging adults. Inversely, Parks and Recreations NBC's is about a government office who's leaders haven't matured but have succeed. While the media's portrayal of the lack of development among adults is humorous, it does contain some real life truths. People nowadays are savvier than ever, almost to a fault. They know their young, have parents who can support them as they search for self discovery, and they still feel like they are young. Young is the keyword.
