After reading
the article “What Is It About 20-Something”, exposing circumstances that young
people take much longer to grow up than elder generations did, I feel that
everything mentioned in the article is
very real to my own life. I am 24 now, and many of my friends are married and
have babies in these few years while I am still going to college for chasing my
educational goal. It would seem that I have not achieved any of the five
milestones in adulthood, however, it late adulthood has become common in
today’s society. Time is changing, so the orderly progression is not that
important anymore. On the other hand, people have been more concerned about
education that is foundation of future career.
Parents
are overprotecting and oversupporting their children, is the main reason why adulthood is happening later than ever. Many parents still provide privilege of not
growing up to their 20s children, satisfy their material needs and keep them at
home. This might cause children’s reliant mind and keep them unprepared for
their independent life. For example, my brother, who is already 29 years old,
is married and has a baby boy. Even though he supposes to be independent much
earlier, my mother still gives him money at regular intervals. Therefore,
I think that parents have responsibilities for late adulthood.
