I found myself in an awkward position after reading the article. At first, I was relieved that being an underachiever was not a big deal because it was becoming a phenomena and the society was more and more tolerant of it. I think the society's approval is important, especially to those who are trying to fit in. But then I realized how teenagers, or even children, used to work, to be adults in the absence of an education system so much earlier in the past. It got me thinking, are we progressing or regressing? Of course our civilization is always moving forward, but is it the case for all of us, most of us, or only for those who are at the very top?
I was glad to be informed of the 5 milestones. Life was meaningless. Now, with those general goals in mind, I have a better understanding of what to do with my life. However, those goals can be motivations as well as pressure. Although less and less people have achieved those goals, I still feel obligated to do so. Knowing some people have finished before I even started, that feeling is not helpful at all.
